Io Caldera

Voyager 1 took this narrow-angle camera image on 5 March 1979 from a distance of 69,000 kilometers. The feature shown is a volcanic caldera which may be actively spewing material into space (dark gray fuzz near the upper-right part of the caldera rim). In addition, very dark lava has flowed out of the fissure and spread on the floor of the caldera.
